Cytology in veterinary medicine

Cytology is a method of assessing microscopic appearance of cells. We obtain these cells by aspirating them with the needle from the affected site. Using a needle and a syringe, we place the tissue sample into the needle and then transfer it to the slide and then examine the sample after we color it. The method is painful in the same way as a regular injections and often brings valuable information. We use cytology mainly for distinguishing inflammation from the tumor. Some tumors can be diagnosed with cytology (eg mastocytoma) itself. At our clinic we specialize in cytological assessment of specimens. High-quality modern microscope and the use of immersion oil are required.

In the figure on the left there is little wart on dog´s lip. The cytological examination revealed that that is not a harmless wart, but a potentially malignant tumor with mast cells, and that is why we have surgically removed it in a timely manner.
