What is electrochemotherapy? Electrochemotherapy (ECT) is a modern method of treating tumors. It combines the administration of low-dose chemotherapy intravenously with short electrical pulses. These allow the drug to reach directly into the tumor cells, where it is effective. For which tumors is it used? for superficial skin and subcutaneous tumors for tumors in the oral cavity, nose, lips, eyelids or rectum as an alternative where surgery is not possible sometimes after surgery - to remove residual tumor cells sometimes before surgery - to increase the chance of complete removal How does it work? the animal is put under short general anesthesia, the patient must be fasting and there should be no contraindications to general anesthesia an antitumor drug - bleomycin is used special electrodes are placed in the tumor area, which are released in a series of short electrical impulses the entire procedure usually takes 20–50 minutes after waking up from anesthesia, most patients go home the same day
What are the advantages? • targeted effect on tumor cells • gentle method with minimal overall side effects • possibility of repetition as needed Possible risks and limitations • temporary swelling or soreness at the application site • formation of scabs or ulcers that gradually heal What to expect after the procedure? • after the procedure, swelling, redness or soreness may be present at the treatment site for the first few days - painkillers are necessary • we recommend cooling the site • healing usually takes 2-4 weeks • check-ups at the clinic are planned individually according to the progress • we usually agree that you send us photos of the treatment site every 3-7 days to info@animed.cz or on our Facebook
